Franklin Templeton plans 2 ETFs that turn stock dividends into Bitcoin

Franklin Templeton has moved closer to launching two exchange-traded funds that would invest in U.S. stocks and reinvest dividends into Bitcoin exposure, with new regulatory filings detailing their fees, portfolio allocations and trading plans.

    Summary

    • Franklin Templeton registered two dividend-to-Bitcoin ETFs for Nasdaq trading.
    • The equity ETF lists a 0.09% fee, while the innovation fund lists 0.19%.
    • Both strategies begin with 5% Bitcoin exposure and reinvest stock dividends.
    • Bitcoin allocations face quarterly rebalancing and a separate 20% limit.

According to an October 22 SEC registration, the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF and Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF have registered their shares for trading on Nasdaq.

The funds would combine conventional stock investing with a system that directs dividend income toward Bitcoin-linked investments. Their proposed tickers are FBEQ and FIBT, although Franklin Templeton has not confirmed when trading will begin.

ETF analyst Nate Geraci drew attention to the products on October 26, describing them as funds that would hold American stocks while directing their dividends into Bitcoin.

“Basically like investing in S&P 500 & Nasdaq 100 w/ dividends going to btc,” Geraci wrote, describing the planned structure as an accessible way for conventional equity investors to gain cryptocurrency exposure.

He said the funds were targeting a 5% Bitcoin allocation and called Franklin Templeton’s approach “smart product design.”

The two ETFs follow separate indexes maintained by VettaFi. The U.S. equity product tracks a large-cap index based on a universe of 500 major American companies, while the innovation strategy focuses on 100 companies selected from an innovation-oriented stock universe.

Both indexes begin with 95% allocated to equities and 5% to Bitcoin-related investments.

Franklin Templeton originally filed the dividend strategy in June, establishing plans for the two funds before making subsequent amendments to their registration documents.

The October filing concerns registration of securities under the Securities Exchange Act. It does not establish that investors can already purchase the ETFs.

How will the dividend-to-Bitcoin strategy work?

The investment strategy takes dividend payments from the underlying stock portfolios and systematically reinvests them into Bitcoin exposure.

According to the October 22 fund prospectus, regular and special dividends are incorporated into the indexes’ Bitcoin allocation on the trading day following the relevant ex-dividend date.

The funds will seek to follow those indexes through instruments including Bitcoin exchange-traded products, futures, options and eligible depositary receipts.

Consequently, investors would own ETF shares providing exposure to stocks and Bitcoin-linked assets, not Bitcoin deposited directly into their personal wallets.

The allocation would change as dividends accumulate or market prices fluctuate, with specific limits controlling how much of each portfolio can remain invested in Bitcoin.

At quarterly rebalancing, an allocation above 5% would be reduced to 4.5%. If Bitcoin exposure remains at or below 5%, the index would leave that weighting unchanged.

A separate 20% ceiling applies between scheduled reviews. Crossing that threshold would trigger a reduction to 4.5% at the close of the second business day following the breach.

Franklin Templeton reveals different management fees

The updated prospectus lists annual management fees of 0.09% for the Franklin US Equity Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF and 0.19% for the Franklin US Innovation Bitcoin DRIP Index ETF.

Those charges equal approximately $9 and $19 annually, respectively, on a $10,000 investment before accounting for market movements, brokerage charges or other costs outside the stated operating expenses.

The filing identifies VettaFi as the index provider and permits certain Bitcoin-related instruments to be held through a wholly owned subsidiary in the Cayman Islands.

The prospectus warns that cryptocurrency volatility, derivatives exposure, transaction expenses and regulatory changes could affect performance.

Franklin Templeton already offers direct cryptocurrency exposure through products including its Franklin Bitcoin ETF and the Franklin Crypto Index ETF, which combines Bitcoin and Ether exposure.

The proposed dividend strategies would add an equity component to that existing lineup.

What happens next for Franklin Templeton’s ETFs?

An October 22 post-effective amendment contains the funds’ investment terms, while the separate Form 8-A identifies Nasdaq as the exchange where their shares are registered.

Franklin Templeton’s registration process has included filings dating back to June, followed by amendments in August, September and October.

The latest prospectus identifies the funds as newly offered and provides no historical portfolio turnover figures.

Their exact first trading date remains unconfirmed, and the registration documents do not establish how much money investors will place into either fund when trading begins.

The prospectus specifies creation units generally consisting of 100,000 shares for the U.S. equity fund and 50,000 shares for the innovation fund, with authorized participants responsible for creating and redeeming large blocks of ETF shares.
