BlackRock CEO warns AI slowdown could trigger recession

BlackRock CEO Larry Fink has warned that restrictions on artificial intelligence data center construction could push the U.S. into a recession, while raising concerns about the country’s $40 trillion national debt during an October 14 interview.

    Summary

    • BlackRock CEO Larry Fink warned that stopping U.S. data center construction could trigger economic recession.
    • Fink raised concerns about America’s $40 trillion national debt and increasing government demand for credit.
    • BlackRock reported $205 billion in quarterly net inflows, taking managed assets to $15.5 trillion worldwide.
    • Pew Research found growing public opposition to data centers over environmental damage and electricity costs.
    • BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF provides cryptocurrency exposure while the company expands investments in artificial intelligence infrastructure.

CNBC reported that Fink considers spending on artificial intelligence infrastructure an important source of U.S. economic activity. The executive warned that stopping major construction projects could reduce business investment at a time when federal borrowing and rising interest rates are already placing pressure on financial markets.

His comments followed BlackRock’s third quarter earnings announcement, which showed $205 billion in new client funds and a 19% increase in annual revenue.

BlackRock CEO warns data center ban could cause recession

Fink said that a nationwide suspension of new data center construction could severely affect the American economy.

The executive was discussing growing opposition to the facilities used to power artificial intelligence systems, including concerns about electricity consumption and environmental damage.

During his CNBC interview, he warned that “a moratorium of some sort in this country” would lead to a recession.

He pointed to the money technology companies are investing in buildings, computer equipment, power supplies and supporting infrastructure.

“So much of our economy is based on the buildout of this capex,” Fink said, referring to capital expenditure.

Capital expenditure describes money businesses spend on long term assets such as buildings, machinery and equipment.

Companies developing AI systems require substantial computing capacity to train models and operate their services. Meeting that demand has led to major construction programs across the United States.

Fink argued that stopping those investments would affect companies involved in construction, electricity generation and technology manufacturing.

The warning represents his assessment of the economic risks associated with a potential construction ban. No nationwide moratorium has been announced, and the interview did not establish that a recession is already underway.

Investment bank Moody’s has estimated that U.S. data center spending could reach approximately $700 billion in 2026, with cumulative investment potentially exceeding $2.4 trillion by 2030.

The forecasts reflect planned capital expenditure and remain subject to changes in financing costs, demand and construction schedules.

BlackRock has identified artificial intelligence infrastructure as an investment area, including the financing of data centers and associated energy facilities.

Its September outlook on U.S. stocks and artificial intelligence described how continued spending on computing infrastructure was supporting corporate earnings, while increasing competition for investment capital.

Americans raise concerns about AI data centers

Fink’s comments followed growing public opposition to large data center projects.

The Pew Research Center reported in September that Americans had become more concerned about the effects of data centers on their communities.

In an August survey, 54% of U.S. adults considered data centers mostly harmful to the environment, compared with 39% in January.

Half of respondents believed the facilities had negative effects on household energy costs, up from 38% earlier in the year.

Concerns about the quality of life for people living near data centers increased from 30% to 49% over the same period.

The survey collected responses from 10,548 adults between July 20 and August 9.

Public opinion about the economic benefits was more divided. Pew found that 22% considered data centers beneficial for local employment, while 24% viewed their effect on jobs negatively.

The results indicate that some Americans recognize the employment opportunities associated with data centers while questioning their environmental and financial costs.

Fink challenged several of the concerns during his interview, describing much of the criticism as “misinformation.”

“Data centers are not the problem,” he said.

The executive defended the construction programs by pointing to employment opportunities in building projects, power infrastructure and the manufacture of computing hardware.

However, Pew’s findings document public concerns that differ from Fink’s position.

The BlackRock CEO did not announce any agreement with lawmakers or local authorities concerning restrictions on data center development.

Larry Fink warns about $40 trillion U.S. debt

Alongside artificial intelligence spending, Fink raised concerns about the amount of money the U.S. government borrows.

The executive estimated that the national debt had reached $40 trillion in 2026, compared with approximately $8 trillion in 2000.

“U.S. deficits are starting to have a serious impact,” he said.

Fink explained that higher government borrowing increases demand for available investment capital.

As the Treasury sells more bonds to finance government spending, it competes with businesses seeking money for expansion and infrastructure projects.

The BlackRock executive said larger government bond auctions were contributing to those pressures.

“We grew $32 trillion in 26 years,” he said, referring to the increase in federal debt.

He argued that the government and private sector were competing for financing at a time when companies needed substantial amounts of money for artificial intelligence projects.

Higher demand for borrowing can contribute to rising financing costs, depending on investor demand, Federal Reserve policy and other financial conditions.

During BlackRock’s October 14 earnings call, Fink discussed the increasing difficulty of securing capital at attractive rates.

The company’s published earnings release described continued demand for financing across artificial intelligence infrastructure and private markets.

Fink called for increased private investment to support economic growth.

“We need to unlock private capital to grow the U.S. economy by 3%,” he said during the CNBC interview.

His proposed approach centers on encouraging institutional investors and other private lenders to finance businesses and infrastructure projects. The executive did not announce a government agreement or a new federal policy targeting that growth rate.

BlackRock reports $205 billion in inflows as Bitcoin faces pressure

Fink’s economic warning came as BlackRock reported stronger third quarter financial results.

The investment manager announced on October 14 that client assets reached approximately $15.5 trillion at the end of September.

The firm attracted $205 billion in net inflows during the quarter, bringing inflows over the preceding 12 months to $869 billion.

Revenue increased 19% from the previous year to approximately $7.8 billion.

Adjusted earnings per share rose 38% to $15.93, while the adjusted operating margin reached 47.8%.

BlackRock’s iShares exchange traded funds attracted approximately $135 billion in new investments during the quarter.

The financial results came as BlackRock continued developing its operations across traditional markets, private credit, infrastructure and digital assets.

Its iShares Bitcoin Trust, trading under the ticker IBIT, provides investors with Bitcoin exposure through shares listed on a traditional stock exchange.

The fund launched in January 2024 and has attracted substantial institutional and individual investor demand.

Earlier coverage of BlackRock’s Bitcoin ETF inflows documented $1.4 billion entering IBIT during an eight day period in April 2026.

By October, the fund had accumulated approximately $65.62 billion in net inflows since launch, according to the SoSoValue figures cited in the October 15 market report.

Bitcoin traded near $81,200 during that reporting period, following declines across cryptocurrency and equity markets after the latest U.S. inflation figures. Fink did not predict a specific Bitcoin price during his CNBC comments.

Earlier reporting on BlackRock’s Bitcoin and AI investment approach examined the firm’s assessment of cryptocurrency volatility alongside its investments in power infrastructure, technology and data centers.

The company continues pursuing financing opportunities related to artificial intelligence.

In its third quarter earnings disclosures, BlackRock identified demand for financing from large technology companies as one of the areas supporting its private markets business.

BlackRock’s SEC filing for the quarter ended September 30 confirmed $205 billion in net inflows, an adjusted operating margin of 47.8%, and $550 million in share repurchases during the period.
